International conference of shanty dwellers will begin today

The opening session of the international conference of shanty dwellers will begin BMICH this evening under the title of “cities without shanties”. Representative from 47 countries will participate in the conference with the aim of providing a substantial housing unit for each family living in slums. Issuing a communiqué on this event Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickremanayake says that Sri Lanka has implemented a number of projects to replace shanties with modern houses. He also points out that shanties are a major obstacle for the urban development in many countries including Sri Lanka.
