Battery cells to Lanka seized

RAMANATHAPURAM: Indian Coast Guard (ICG) person nel seized a huge consignment of battery cells filled in 67 cartons, meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka.
ICG personnel who were on patrol noticed a torch light signal from a boat anchored off the coast of Hare Island and rushed there. However, the country boat, fitted with outboard motor, sped to Hare Island where its occupants alighted from the boat.
The group escaped into a thick jungle under the cover of darkness after abandoning the boat and the contraband. Meanwhile, a hovercraft rushed to the Island and Coast Guard personnel tried to apprehend the fugitives but no one was arrested.
