JVP wants Govt. to disarm TMVP

The JVP has called upon the Government to disarm the Pillaiyan Group immediately. It is of the view that there is no need for any group to carry arms while the police and the armed forces are engaged in protecting the public.
Addressing the media JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe said his party was not worried at all about an electoral alliance between the Government and the Pillaiyan Group. It was not only the Pillaiyan Group that had come under threats from the LTTE; the LTTE posed a threat to the JVP as well, he said adding that but his party had never asked for arms.
The JVP would go it alone at the PC polls scheduled for May with the objective of creating an environment for the people to exercise their franchise freely, Amarasinghe said.
The JVP had no difficulty whatsoever in selecting candidates unlike the SLFP, which was clinging onto Pillaiyan, unable to stand on its own, he said.
