Illangakoon says they have received 29 complaints so far relating to the Batticaloa local polls. 13 of them have already been settled. In a media briefing held in Colombo this morning the DIG said a peaceful environment is prevailing in the Batticaloa district. The police have tightened security in the area to conduct the polls without any hindrance. Speaking at the media briefing government’s defence spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said attempts of certain section to create a wrong picture about the local polls have completely failed. PAFFREL has also declared that the elections are being conducted within the democratic framework.
Meanwhile, the UN High Commissioner’s Office on Refugees has hailed the Sri Lankan Navy for rescuing 71 illegal migrants whose ship occurred an engine trouble in seas off Mullaitivu few days ago. The Indian navy have not monitored this ship which was drifting in their sea area for 12 days. But the Sri Lankan navy monitored this ship in their waters and rescued the Myanmar and Bangladeshi nationals.
