Second and third coal power plants in Sampur and Welvur

The Ministry of Power and Energy will construct the second and third coal power plants in Sampur and Welvur in Trincomalee. Construction of the Sampur coal power plant with a capacity of thousand megawatts will commence in June this year. First stage of this project is to add 500 megawatts to the national electricity grid by 2012. NTGC Construction Company of India has undertaken the construction of Sampur power plant. The project will be supervised by the Ceylon Electricity Board. The land required to set up the two power plants have already been acquired.
