Suspect Prisons Commissioner’s assets being scrutinized

A number of allegations against the Commissioner of Prisons, who was transferred out of the Welikada Prisons after the CID was called in to probe his alleged misconduct were being received by the prison authorities, Prisons Department sources said yesterday.
Among those who had made complaints against the Commissioner were prison staff and members of the public. Prisons authorities had been monitoring his activities over a long period, sources said.
The Justice Ministry was also looking into his assets as it was alleged that he had been receiving various gifts and money from the families of some prisoners in return for in return for favourablle treatment for prisoners, sources said.
