Eastern province polls - first political killing took place

(Lanka-e-News, ) As assassination of a youth has been reported from Valachchenai of Batticaloa District yesterday (6th) as the first election violence of the Eastern Province Polls. The person who was assassinated was identified as Mohammed Thambi Majid Ashroff alias Jauffer, a strong supporter of Muslim Congress.
He was killed in Birandrachchenai area in Valachchenai around 5.30 pm yesterday by using a sharp weapon. It is reported that Mr. Ashroff was having political disagreements with one Ameen who is a candidate of Batticaloe District under UPFA ticket, during the last Local Government elections, and relatives of late Ashroff believe that one Nazeer, a supporter of Ameen is responsible for this killing.
UPFA candidate Ameen is a supporter of Minister Ameer Ali.
Mr. Ashroff who killed yesterday was hoping to migrate tomorrow (8th).
Muslim Mosques Federation of Kalkuda have made arrangements for a Hartal by closing all the shops in the town from 12.00 noon today (7th) to oppose this killing.
