UNP General Secretary, Tissa Attanayake said that the alliance formed between the UNP and the SLMC have decided to contest the forthcoming Eastern Provincial elections under the theme- ‘saving the country from the satakaye saapaya (curse of the shawl)’.
The decision has been taken since this was an important political crossroad regarding future of the entire country.
Considering the prevailing security conditions, the UNP-SLMC alliance hopes to conduct at least one rally in each of the districts where polls are to be held, Attanayake added.
These rallies will be participated by the two leaders of the parties, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Rauff Hakeem, he added.
Leaders and candidates of those districts are already meeting people and conducting awareness programs, the UNP General Secretary said.
Through their election propaganda in the areas, the alliance hopes to create awareness regarding the fallout of the peace process as well as the skyrocketing cost of living.
