GRANDLYON plans to complete second phase of the Walasmulla Sewerage plant

The France based organisation GRANDLYON, together with VEOLIA , a World Leader in Water Treatment are in Sri Lanka to complete the phase II ,of the Walasmulla Hospital Sewerage Treatment System.
The Visiting French delegation of Grand Lyon said their organisation assists Sri Lankans and their mission is neither political nor commercial . Speaking to media in Colombo on Monday Guy Peyretti ,Deputy Director of GRANDLYON , said ‘They intend to provide further support for Sri Lanka on a regular basis’. Gradyon spent 50,000 Euros for the first phase of the project and the visiting delegation will inspect and prepare a feasibility study on Phase II shortly.“Our aim is to complete the project within this year” said Peyretti . Responding to media, he further added , the Government of Sri Lanka has extended it’s fullest support for the ongoing project.
In November 2004, the City of Lyon in France obtained the approval to launch a European Programme named AIAURBS/PROACT to reinforce relations between European and Asian Cities.
This programme commenced in the month of November 2004, and Sri Lanka was well represented with Municipal Council representatives from Negombo, Moratuwa, Dehiwela/Mount Lavania who attended the inaugural meeting in Lyon for the purpose of establishing links with European Cities. It was a month before Sri Lanka was severely affected by Tsunami.
A delegation headed by Mr.Alain Joly arrived in Sri Lanka and met His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who at the time was the Prime Minister and Mr. Nimal Siripala De Silva, Minister of Health. The emphasis at these meetings centered around assiting Hospitals and the youth who were severely affected by Tsunami.
A MOU was signed between Grandlyon and the Ministry of Health to rehabilatate Hospitals and a joint venture was formed between BIOFORCE, France and the Chamber of Construction in Sri Lanka to create Training Centres.
The outcome of these MOUs have resulted in three Training Centers being set up in Balapitiya, Matara and Kalutara and the Refurbishment of the Water Supply System at the Walasmulla Hospital.
Furthermore, BIOFORCE LANKA was created with a view to setting up a network of local Companies to donate medicines and other essential items to hospitals. Since December 2007, the supply of medicines and other items to the Maharagama Cancer Hospital and Weeraketiya Hospital commenced.
Mr.Guy Peyretti , Mr. Robert Jonac of VEOLIA and Mr. Benoit Silve of BIOFORCE have returned to Sri Lanka to conduct meetings with local Business Leaders, the Ministry of Health and the Political Leaders with the obiective of discussing the possibility of improving the Waste Water System at the Walasmulla Hospital, constructing water storage tanks with pumps for families in Hatton and also to set up training programs in the other areas of the Island .
