Jobs abroad for Lankan doctors

posted by Editor at

The Government Medical Officers’ Association said yesterday that in consultation with the Ministries of Health and Finance, it had worked out a scheme to provide jobs and post-graduate training abroad for Sri Lankan doctors. In a statement the GMOA pointed out that Health Minister, Nimal Siripala de Silva has said the graduates in medicine would not get employment from year 2010.
Although it was a political statement without any base, it would be a misfortune if it happens. The GMOA is taking steps to prevent such a situation.

The GMOA suggested to the President a scheme to remedy the situation by providing employment to the doctors abroad and the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Dr. P. B. Jayasundera approved it through the budget proposals.

Accordingly, arrangements have been made to set up a coordination centre at the Colombo National Hospital premises within two weeks.

We have shown the possibility of earning a large income for the country through this project and how the expenditure on free education could be off set.

The office of the President, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Health were contributing to the project.
It was expected through this scheme to find a solution to the problem of training abroad which was lacking in our Post Graduate programme for doctors.
