JVP dissident MP's driver assaulted
posted by Editor at 10:20 PMThe driver of a member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna dissident group led by Wimal Weerawansa has been attacked by a group of party supporters, reports said.
Samansiri Herath, MP for Puttalam district, was attended a news conference organized in support of the JVP's Parliamentary Group leader and Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa after he made a special speech in Parliament.
Yesterday night (Apr. 09th), a group of JVP supporters had arrived at Mr. Herath's residence to discuss the crisis facing their party.
Their discussion went on for several hours, and it later turned into a clash, according to reports.
The parliamentarian's bodyguards had taken him safely inside the house, but his driver was assaulted by the group, it is alleged.
However, Mr. Herath or the assault victim had not lodged an official complaint, but upon being informed of the incident by his bodyguards, the Chilaw Police had obtained statements from the two.
The injured driver was first admitted to the Chilaw Hospital, from where he was transferred to the Ragama Teaching Hospital.
It has now been established that the vehicle belonging to the party's Monaragala district MP Padma Udaya Shantha that Mr. Herath had used yesterday for his journey home, had been hijacked by the group of attackers.
Vehicles of three other JVP MPs were also stolen on April 08th from Parliament garage, reports said.
