Preliminary arrangements for the eastern provincial election have been completed

District Election officers of Trincomalee, Ampara and Batticaloa districts say all preliminary arrangements for the eastern provincial election have been completed. The Election officers informed media that the distribution of election cards and assigning the officers for election duty are being completed.
Officers from other districts have been appointed as election officers for eastern provincial election. A workshop to brief these officers on eastern provincial council election will be held today and tomorrow. These officers will be given an introduction on all activities pertaining to election including postal voting procedures. The Assistant Elections Commissioner of Batticaloa district
Mr. S. Sudhakaran said that arrangements are made in 125 centres in Batticaloa district to cast the postal votes. Meanwhile, Assistant Elections Commissioner of Ampara district Mr. L.D.K. Thennakoon says 253 centres will be established in Ampara for this purpose. Assistant Elections Commissioner of Trincomalee district Mr. M.S.K. Bandara Mapa says centres are established in Trincomalee district to cast postal votes. The propaganda activities of eastern provincial election had already been started.
Meanwhile PAFFEREL says an environment has been created in the eastern province to hold a free and fair provincial council election. Only a few minor incidents have been reported so far since the closing date of accepting nominations. PAFFEREL has already commenced monitoring activities of the pre-election period. Foreign monitors from counties such as Germany, US, Portugal, Thailand and Switzerland will be in Sri Lanka to observe the eastern polls. 2,500 local observers will also monitor the election. Chairman of PAFFEREL Kingsley Rodrigo says they will meet leaders of political parties and independent groups contesting the election this week. They also hope to meet the Elections Commissioner.
