Two Lankan Tamils held for smuggling
posted by Editor at 8:23 PMCHENNAI: The 'Q' Branch wing of the Tamil Nadu police have arrested two Sri Lankan Tamils, Nandharuban and Sivakumar while they were trying to smuggle tractor tyres.
The police have seized their vehicle along with 14 front wheel tyres on Thursday and arrested the car driver of the duo Alagar, a resident of Rameshwaram.
The destination of the consignment is not yet known. Police intercepted the car at a check-post near Ramanathapuram and seized the tyres hidden inside.
"Since these tyres are used in army trucks and jeeps, we think they might be meant for the LTTE," the police said.
"The arrested persons claimed that they were taking the tyres to Coimbatore. But we are not convinced. The case has now been handed over to the local police. The investigation is still on," a 'Q' Branch official told The Times of India.
The two arrested persons have been remanded in judicial custody.
