Mervyn to close down opponents' liquor shops in Kelaniya

Minister Mervyn Silva has reportedly said that he would close down all liquor shops in his Kelaniya electorate, except those owned by his supporters.

According to 'Divaina' newspaper, the Labour Minister also promised at a function yesterday to shut down all beef stalls in the area, and to free four cattle from slaughter every month.

He was speaking in the presence of Chief Incumbent of the Kelani Raja Maha Vihara Ven. Kollupitiye Sri Mahinda Sangharakkitha Thera at the opening of a new bridge across the Kelani River.


The temple's Basnayake Nilame Dhammika Attygalle, Highways Minister T.B. Ekanayake, Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Priyantha Kariyapperuma, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority Nalaka Bamunusinghe and several other politicians also attended, the newspaper reported.
