Tracking system for buses

The National Transport Commission (NTC) is hoping to launch a vehicle tracking system for public transport buses.

The NTC has already asked the public for expressions of interest regarding this project and will be calling for local expertise on tracking technology to be used in the buses.

The first phase of this pilot project is to cover around 3000 inter provincial buses and will be expanded to about 25,000 buses.

The NTC initially intends to only track the location of the buses. It is expected to develop this project to provide web based real time information to operators and passengers.

Director General, NTC, M.A. Jeffrey told The Sunday Leader that initially the tracking devices will only be on public buses recording the time the bus leaves and arrives at the bus depots, and the time taken for each journey to determine the speed at which the bus has been travelling.

"This will be a pilot project to see if the buses are conforming to the given time tables," said Jeffrey.
