UNP to seek legal redress against elections

posted by Editor at

The United National Party is to seek a Supreme Court order against the conduct of any elections until the establishment of independent commissions.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the party would go to courts next week for an injunction to the Elections Commissioner.

He said that there was no credibility of free and fair elections being held until the independent elections commission becomes existent under the 17th Amendment to the Constitution.

Mr. Attanayake also noted that the Elections Commissioner had no power or an administrative mechanism to act against poll malpractices and violence.
