posted by Editor at

At least 10 people were injured when ruling party politicians attacked a protest by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna at Arachchikattuwa town in Chilaw this morning (June 08).

According to JVP sources, North Central Provincial Councilor from the party Sithara Nonis organized the demonstration to urge the government to bring down the high cost of commodities.

Soon after a large number of protestors began their agitation, a group led by the ruling party’s NCP councilor Sanath Nishantha and member of the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha Jagath Samantha stormed the scene and started assaulting the participants.

Around 10 JVP activists, including Mr. Nonis, were seriously injured in the incident and admitted to the Chilaw Hospital.

Councilor Sanath Nishantha who led the attack, was also wounded.

The JVP lodged a complaint with the Chilaw Police regarding the assault on their peaceful protest, party sources said, adding that they would stage a demonstration at the same location tomorrow morning to condemn the incident.
