Committee of seniors to reorganize UNP

posted by Editor at

The United National Party ended its Working Committee meeting today (June 16th) by appointing a committee of party seniors to recommend measures for the reorganization of the UNP.
It comprises Joseph Michael Perera, John Amaratunga, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Sarathchandra Rajakaruna and Renuka Herath.
The UNP's WC committee was in focus after the state media reported that Ranil Wickremesinghe was facing an internal rebellion that would expel him from the party leadership at the meeting.

Despite such reports, the meeting took place in a calm atmosphere, where it was reiterated that the party needed reorganization in order to bring it back to power, with Lakshman Seneviratne and Johnston Fernando strongly criticizing the existing inefficient state of affairs.
Mr. Wickremesinghe, after considering the views and proposals made at the extended meeting, decided to appoint a committee for the party's reorganization.
The WC meeting also saw the appointment of two nomination boards for the polls in the Sabaragamuwa and north central provinces, with General Secretary Tissa Attanayake handed over the related coordination work.
It also vested Mr. Wickremesinghe with the powers to discuss and reach unions with other parties to contest future elections.
