Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa made these remarks at a meeting to convey cabinet decisions in Colombo today. Compensation provided to repair houses damaged by floods has been increased to one hundred thousand rupees from fifty thousand rupees.
A ministerial sub committee under the leadership of Prime Minister has been appointed to prepare a long term plan to prevent disasters caused by floods and other natural calmities.
The Minister added that the UNP agitation against Fuel price increases has been an utter failure, as there was no co-operation from the general public. Some of the top UNP politicos came to the protest in ultra luxury gaz guzzling vehicles.
Minister Yapa has thoroughly rejected the accusations levelled by the JVP regarding alleged granting of fuel concessions to politicians and ambassadors.
He reminded that the government provides a 30 rupee subsidy on a litre of diesel and a fifty rupee subsidy on a liter of kerosene.
