Dharmadasa, Mendis signed multi million $ Taj TV deal without authority?
posted by Editor at 12:22 PMAn independent committee has been appointed by the Minister of Sports to conduct a detailed inquiry to find out if Jayantha Dharmadasa the former chief of the Sri Lanka Cricket interim committee, and its current CEO Duleep Mendis entered into two multi million dollar TV rights agreements with Taj TV without legal authority.
The information about these two TV rights ‘deals’ reached the ears of the Minister of Sports Mr Gamini Lokuge toward the end of 2007. He immediately wrote to the Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee and informed the Secretary that until he inquires into this matter the said two contracts shall stand suspended.
Immediately thereafter the Minister acting on legal advice sent a questionnaire to the Secretary of the Interim Committee asking him to explain the background to these two Agreements.
After receiving the relevant replies the said replies were forwarded to an eminent President’s Counsel for legal opinion.
“In the absence of a specific authorization by the Interim Committee it appears that neither Mr. Dharmadasa nor Mr. Mendis had the legal authority to commit the Interim Committee or SLC to these two addendums. They had exceeded their jurisdiction in entering into these addendums as representing the interim committee,” states a twenty-one paged Opinion sent to the Ministry of Sports by a leading President’s Counsel in Sri Lanka.
