Claiming their Fundamental Rights were violated after being tear gassed and water cannoned by police during a protest march in Colombo, monks of the Inter-University Bhikku Federation (IUBF), lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) yesterday (June 27th).
Citing the Defence Secretary and the IGP as respondents, the IUBF requested the HRC to conduct an unbiased inquiry into the incident, convener of the IUBF, Ven. Namaloya Ananda Thera said.
The IUBF convener added that video clips and newspaper cut-outs containing pictures and details of the incident were also handed over to the Commission as evidence for the investigations.
The 11 Buddhist monks who were arrested following the incident, were released on bail yesterday, he further said.
