Mervyn evade hearing on assaulting SLRC News Director

posted by Editor at

The Human Rights Commission today (June 19th) took up a complaint filed by four media organizations against Minister Mervyn Silva for assaulting the former News Director of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, T.M.G. Chandrasekera.
Though the minister informed to appear before the HRC at the hearing, he has failed to do so.
On 2007 December 27th, Labour Minister Mervyn Silva and a group of thugs entered the SLRC premises and assaulted the state owned institution’s News Director.
Subsequently, a heated situation took place as the angered SLRC workers hurled their fury on the attackers.
Minister Silva was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital with head injuries while one of his accomplices, Kudu Lal was arrested by the police and produced before the courts.
Later, Kudu Lal was released on bail.
Following this incident, three more SLRC workers were attacked in separate incidents while two others received death threats.
On the face of protests conducted by media organizations, trade unions and political parties, even President Mahinda Rajapaksa was compelled to intervene and a three-man ministerial committee was set up to probe into the crisis.
However, this committee is yet to issue a report on the matter.
