Minister averts SLC insurance scam
posted by Editor at 10:16 AMSports Minister Gamini Lokuge has directed his secretary S. Liyanagama, the acting chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket, to award the controversial insurance tender for the upcoming Indian tour to a previously government run insurance company.
A near and dear of a VVIP of SLC was appointed as insurance consultant to SLC, who then in turn got a private company in which he has an interest the insurance tender for the Sri Lanka’s tour of West Indies, and this contravening the tender procedures to boot.
In the light of this incident, the companies who were at the receiving end due to alleged favouritism have complained to the ministry of sports, which subsequently decided that the tender for the forthcoming Indian tour be awarded to a previously government run insurance concern. Accordingly, the insurance tender for the forthcoming Indian tour of Sri Lanka —- worth Rs. 17 million smackers — is to be awarded to the said insurance company.
A former CEO of Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, also ran a similar racket ten years back.
