Norwegian embassy under threat: Oslo
posted by Editor at 11:05 PMThe Norwegian Foreign Ministry has listed the Norwegian Embassy in Sri Lanka as being under threat of a “terrorist” attack, Norway’s Aftenposten newspaper reported yesterday.
It reported that the Foreign Ministry list also identified five other Norwegian embassies which are said to be under threat of terrorist attack. They include the embassies in Islamabad Afghanistan, Sudan, Algeria and Al-Ram in the Palestinian region.
The ministry also issued warnings against unnecessary travel to these areas and urged Norwegians in the listed countries to be especially cautious.
Norwegian embassies in Cairo, Beirut, Damascus, Harare and Teheran also mount serious security challenges, the Aftenposten reported.
The embassy in Damascus was plundered in 2006 and set on fire by a mob protesting drawings of Prophet Mohammed in Danish publications and a Norwegian magazine.
Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed that Norway's embassy in Pakistan had long been considered especially vulnerable. He denied, however, that it had received any concrete threats like the Danish Embassy.
