Opposition MPs seek an enhanced fuel allowance

Opposition MPs are discussing the urgent need to increase their Rs. 15,000 monthly fuel allowance due to rapidly escalating petrol and diesel prices.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a vociferous UNP MP told The Island, the recent increase of both diesel and petrol prices had forced them to sharply reduce travel. "I am in a quandary," he said, "we have no option but to make representations to the party leadership." Opposition MPs would like to explore the possibility of seeking parliamentary approval to increase their fuel allowance, he said. He said the present fuel allowance was not enough for even one week.
Another Opposition MP said a bigger fuel bill would be a serious impediment to the forthcoming propaganda campaign for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils. The ministers and government MPs wouldn’t be obstructed by rising fuel costs, he said. While turning a blind eye to the plight of Opposition MPs, the ruling coalition had moved swiftly to increase the fuel allowance of personal staffers of ministers and deputy ministers.
The UNP and the JVP recently launched protests in the city, its suburbs and the provinces to protest against the unprecedented increase in the price of fuel.
A litre of regular diesel and petrol costs Rs. 110 and Rs. 157 respectively at fuel stations run by the CPC. The LIOC has priced a litre of its diesel at Rs. 130 and petrol at Rs. 157.
