S.B. to lead UNP’s campaign at provincial polls?

posted by Editor at

The United National Party has decided to handover its campaign work at the forthcoming elections for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils to the party’s National Organizer S.B. Dissanayake, party sources said.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake will be entrusted with the related coordination activities.

The two decisions are expected to be adopted at the party’s Working Committee meeting on June 16th.

A senior UNP politician said that Mr. Dissanayake was tipped to personally lead campaigning in the NCP, while Sajith Premadasa will look after Sabaragamuwa.

When contacted, Mr. Dissanayake said he was unaware of such a decision, adding that he returned to the country only a few days ago from an overseas visit.

Presently, Mr. Premadasa is out of the island.

A legal expert told ‘Lanka Dissent’ that Mr. Dissanayake could not participate in election activities due to the abolition of his voting rights for 10 years.

Violation of this court order could result in the filing of an election petition, he added.
