SLMC and WPF to form alliance
posted by Editor at 10:03 AMThe Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the Western Peoples Front (WPF), two minority parties, held discussions last week to form an alliance, party sources said.
“Both parties representing the Tamil speaking minorities have realised the historical necessity for this”, a joint statement issued by the two parties said.
The SLMC has also expressed its willingness to participate in the human rights campaign, the Civil Monitoring Committee of which Mano Ganesan is the convener.
The press communiqu‚ further said: “SLMC and WPF both will work together in a loose alliance with United National Party in the opposition. Talks covered many political issues including that of examining methods to be carried out at the time of any future elections. Both sides have agreed to establish a Memorandum of Understanding between two parties”
Parliamentarian Saffeek Rajabdeen and Western Provincial Councilor Praba Ganesan have been nominated to head respective committees of SLMC and WPF.
This joint committee is entrusted with the responsibility of preparing a draft for the MoU. Initial talks were held at SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem’s residence in Colombo.
Rauf Hakeem with members of the SLMC high command participated at the talks while Mano Ganesan and General Secretary Dr. Nalliah Kumaraguruparan MMC represented WPF.
