Sympathies not enough, save civilians: UNP
posted by Editor at 7:20 PMThe main opposition UNP yesterday called on the government to ensure the safety of civilians in view of the string of bomb attacks on buses and trains.
The UNP said: “The bomb attack on a civilian bus in Katubedda has killed more than 20 people while injuring some 50. The UNP extends its condolences to the families of those killed in the attack while wishing quick recovery to those injured.
“It has become a frequent incident in recent times that unarmed civilians are targeted. These terror attacks on civilians have shown what the UNP has been telling continuously in that the government has been unable to ensure the safety of the public. What can be seen today is that the government is satisfied with only issuing condolence messages, while it has failed to ensure the safety of the civilians with the idea that the only solution to the ethnic conflict is a military one.
“Under these circumstances, as the main opposition the UNP urges the government to ensure the safety of civilians as an urgent measure.”
