UNP to protest over VVIP movements next

The second phase of the series of protests against the soaring cost of fuel is to be launched soon during road closures for VVIP movements, UNP Colombo District Leader and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake said .
The first of the series of protests, which was kicked off yesterday was a tremendous success and according to Karunanayake the motorists voluntarily joined to show their support for the UNP against the soaring cost of fuel in the country.
"Since the government knew what the people’s response would be, the police went before court for an injunction to stop the protest yesterday but the Colombo Magistrate in Court number 4 rejected the application and paved the way for the UNP to continue with its planned protest," added Karunanayake.
According to Karunanayake the police enforced its fullest strength to make the protest unsuccessful as some constables were seen harassing the protestors.
"All saw how the cops were busy taking down the vehicle registration numbers threatening the motorists. Every effort taken by the government to disrupt our peaceful protests became unsuccessful," Karunanayake said.
"Our next ‘tooting’ campaign would be held during road closures for VVIP movements. Although the police was worried over the five minute road blockage in the city they have not understood the agony and the difficulty the motorists and the pedestrians have had to suffer due to lengthy road closures in the city for VVIP movements," claimed Karunanayake.
