Shops remained closed today (July 18th) in Chenkalady town in Eravur, Batticaloa to protest the murder of a youth, whose body was found from a land where the EPDP has an office.
Shops and houses in the area hoisted white flags to mourn the death of Devadasan Suresh Kumar, who had been running a foreign employment agency in the town.
The 35-year-old father of two was abducted by a group that came in a white van on June 19th near a filling station in Chenkaladi.
Several EPDP activists, including a Pradeshiya Sabha member, have been arrested in connection with the killing.
Acting on information given by the suspects, authorities dug up a vegetable garden at the EPDP land and found the body.
Suresh Kumar's father identified the body.
The EPDP, led by Minister Douglas Devananda and a partner of the present regime, has been accused of several incidents of kidnappings, murders and extortions.
