Compensate Slave island dwellers - UNP
posted by Editor at 12:23 PMThe main Opposition UNP in Parliament yesterday called on the government to pay compensation to those families in Slave island whose houses were demolished recently and to take action against those who demolished those houses neglecting the court order.
Chief Opposition Whip and UNP MP Joseph Michael Perera who made a special statement in the House yesterday said the demolition of these houses has created a black mark in the country’s history. He said the people expressed their anger as their houses were demolished through applying force and thuggery. Mr. Perera charged that the lawyers who appeared for this case has received death threats. The UNP MP said summits such as SAARC was held in Sri Lanka in the past but the people were never asked to leave their houses for security reasons.
“This is a clear sign of anarchy where the law is not respected,” he said. He stressed that all members of Parliament should exercise their responsibilities in rectifying this situation. “We members of this August assembly should look at this issue independently and not through colored spectacles,” he said.
