Forthcoming strike with the petty objective of toppling the Government says the Government
posted by Editor at 10:17 AMSri Lankan trade unions threatened to dismantle all state services in a July 10 general strike for a pay increase, but the government said it could not meet their demands without hurting its war effort.
Trade unions said a majority of the country's 1.2 million government sector employees would attend in Thursday's strike, which is expected to hit government services from transport to health, after a requested salary increase of 5,000 rupees a month was rejected.
However the government of Sri Lanka said the forthcoming strike with the petty objective of toppling the Government.All government employees must clearly discern the nature of this conspiracy, said Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva .Speaking at an official meeting on Wednesday he said employees in several fields in the Health Sector, including Doctors, Nurses, technical officials in the supplementary services have already informed the Ministry that they will not take part in the strike.
The meeting has been called to ascertain steps taken to continuously carry forward patient treatment and other services in the event of a strike.
The Minister has also instructed the Police to arrest any person attempting harass workers attending to their duties. He stressed that stringent punishments will be imposed on casual and substitute hospital or ministry workers who take part in the strike. Stern action will also taken against those who engage in acts of sabotage.
Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said the strike planned for Thursday is based on some political gains and it is not a strike of the working class. The Minister said in parliament under such circumstances, there is no room for the strike to be successful.
Minister Gunawardena has recalled that the present government has provided many benefits to the government employees, which included salary increases in two budgets. It was the present government which restored the pension payments abolished by the UNP government.
Meanwhile the National Freedom Front says a conspiracy is underway to reverse the gains of the security force in the north. The front points out the responsibility of all at this moment is to encourage the troops to secure more victories in the battle front. The NFF points out the government should take steps to control the cost of living. Senior leader of the front and parliamentarian Piyasiri Wijenayake at a media briefing in parliamentary complex said however, deployment working class to reverse victories of the security forces could never be approved. Speaking to media President of the All Ceylon Trade Union Federation and an opposition parliamentarian K.D.Lal Kantha said the trade unions will definitely go ahead with the planned strike, despite suppressing acts by the government.
The Jathika Hela Urumaya, has described the planned island wide strike as 'a ploy by the UNP and the JVP to rescue LTTE leader Prabhakaran.'
In a statement, the JHU said however, that it admitted the reality of a struggle for living by workers in both the state and private sectors.
Despite the assumed motive to win a pay hike, the two parties were trying to close a petty deal with the Tigers and cover up their own political bankruptcies, it alleged.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that he was saddened by the fact that trade unions were resorting to strike action to gain political mileage at a time when heroic soldiers were sacrificing their lives for the country and nation without expecting any returns. He said, he did not see anything wrong in trade union action by workers to win their rights.However, it is sad to note that methods employed for winning demands that cannot be won through dialogue are now being used to gain political advantage.
