Janaka moves SC against govt.

posted by Editor at

Major General Janaka Perera, the UNP's Chief Ministerial candidate for the North Central Province, yesterday complained to the Supreme Court that despite having acute threats to his life from the LTTE, the State has so far failed to give him adequate security.

He said that Pillaiyan, who is a dissident of the LTTE, was given ample security during the campaign for the Eastern Province Provincial Council Poll. But despite the public regarding the petitioner as a war hero, he is not given adequate security. The petitioner had campaigned widely against the LTTE, when the petitioner was an Ambassador in Australia. The LTTE is hunting for the petitioner, after this.

Major General Perera had asked for at least ten back up vehicles, ten uniformed police officers, with automatic weapons for outer-range back up security, and ten uniformed commandos with automatic weapons for close-range security back up.

The petition alleged that the state has treated him arbitrarily and unfairly on grounds of political opinion.

The petition requested the Court to grant him interim relief by ordering an increase in the personal security forthwith.

He wanted that security to be continued till this petition is finally determined.

Among the respondents are the secretary Defence, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the IGP Jayantha Wickramarathne, the Army Commander, Lt. General Sarath Fonseka, the Commissioner of election and a few others.
