posted by Editor at 11:37 AMLocal Marxists earlier lament on SAARC leaders large security contingents especially on the Indian leader, but now they are playing another tune to support the forthcoming SAARC summit.
Addressing a press briefing on Friday JVP Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said foreign leaders could travel with their security to other country.
“It is usual thing, he said.
Explaining SAARC leaders security, he said they could bring their security staff. President Mahindha Rajapaksha also visits with his security when he travels to a foreign country. However the JVP could not accept if any leader comes with a large security contingent, he said.
He said SAARC would bring trade and investment opportunities to Sri Lanka.
“:It could boost local tourism sector as well as the business among the SAARC countries. Sri Lanka must conduct forth-coming SAARC summit in meaningful way, he said.
However the government said the bodyguards and security personnel of foreign dignitaries attending the upcoming SAARC summit would be allowed to conduct their duties undisturbed but stressed they could not meddle with state security programmes for the summit.
Western Province senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka said the government had allowed foreign security units to arrive along with foreign VIPs to carry out their duties related to the personal security of the respective state leaders.
He said the foreign VIP security units would have to declare their weapons to the local security authorities prior to their operations in Sri Lanka during the summit and they would be allowed to carry arms only after the declaration.
However the Senior DIG stressed none of these VIP security personnel of foreign dignitaries would be allowed to interfere with the local security plan designed for the security of the entire summit.
