TN protest calls for citizenship to Lankan Tamils

posted by Editor at

A South Indian political party staged a demonstration in Tamil Nadu today (July 03rd) and urged the central government to grant citizenship to Sri Lankan Tamils who have sought refuge in South India.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Party, led by T. Thirumavalan, organized the protest that called for an easing of the law to give nationality to these displaced persons, who have been living in South India for the past 25 years.
The treatment of more than 600,000 Sri Lankan Tamils as outsiders has resulted in them being faced with various problems, the protestors said.
Life in welfare camps is not fit for them, Thirumavalan said, adding that these people should be allowed to buy land and housing as well as to start their own businesses.
