Undergrads smash gates & storm UGC
posted by Editor at 10:44 AMProtestors smashed gates of the University Grants Commission in Colombo and stormed the premises today (July 24th) during an agitation to demand solutions to problems at the Faculty of Allied Sciences at the University Peradeniya.
The undergraduates, led by the Inter-University Students Council, demanded a meeting with the UGC chairman.
Convener of the Council, Upul Premaratne said that the faculty opened two years ago had no physical or human resources.
Instead of providing laboratory, lecture hall and other facilities, authorities were shortening the syllabus in an attempt to underrate the subject, he charged.
Mr. Premaratne also called for the reopening of the Kelaniya University which remains closed for around six months now.
However, the UGC chairman refused to meet the protesting students.
Thereafter, the undergraduates burnt the petition they had brought with them at the commission premises, and broke up their protest.
