Govt. adopts double standards over Gen. Fonseka remark
Thursday, 24 December 2009 06:18

The government has adopted double standards and is giving, to the world and the local masses, different interpretations of the newspaper remark attributed to Gen. Sarath Fonseka with the sole intention of slinging mud at him, said his co-spokesman Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Human rights secretary Rajiv Wijesinha has sent a reply to a United Nations letter on the matter, saying Gen. Fonseka has rejected the claim by 'The Sunday Leader', and the government expected the UN to withdraw its letter.

At the same time, the government is accusing the common opposition's presidential candidate of betraying the Army, because it was politically bankrupt and wanted to gain political mileage out of it, Mr. Dissanayake charged.

Also speaking here, co-spokesman Mangala Samaraweera said president Mahinda Rajapaksa has failed to fulfill any of the promises he has made through his 'Mahinda Chinthana' in 2005.

Mr. Samaraweera said he would give a reward of Rs. 100,000 to anyone who would point out a single promise the president has kept.

'Mahinda Chinthana' has become a pack of dreams, he said, adding that the president was taking all the credit for the every flyover opened in the country, without remembering that it was minister A.H.M. Fowzie who had initiated all of them.

Speaking further, Mr. Samaraweera said it was the owner of the wine store at Yaya 5 in Rajanganaya who had posed off as a farmer and handed over Rs. 300,000 to president Rajapaksa at a rally in Anuradhapura.

Fifty per cent of the liquor outlets in the country are displaying cutouts and posters of the president, he charged.
