A student and a teacher were killed and 30 students injured when a tree crashed on to their out door class a short while ago in Vavuni, police and hospital officials said.

The incident occurred at the Thiru Gnana Sambathan, a Tamil language mixed school around 12. Noon, they said.

The teacher was taking a class under the shade of the tree situated in the school’s front yard, when the incident took place, the officials said.

The dead are a female student and a teacher identified Kadiragamar Thambi Rahini.

The injured are recieiving treatment at the Vavuniya hospital.
