Tuesday, 30 June 2009 13:10

Ruwan Media, a branch of Ruwan International Pty Ltd announces today that it will launch the first ever 24/7 Sinhala FM radio outside Sri Lanka from Sydney this year. This is the first 24 hours run live Sinhala real time radio ever established outside Sri Lanka.
Chairman of Ruwan International Pty Ltd, Prasanna Hettiarachchige says that this 24 hour run live radio is a great step for the Sri Lankan community in Australia especially in a post war situation. “Media has a big role in rebuilding the nation, and we are happy to be the first Sri Lankan community media organization in Australia to take this task up” says Mr. Hettiarachchige.
The radio station will initially be broadcasting the services to Sydney and surrounding suburbs and then be extended to Melbourne. In the long run the station will have services to other states in Australia.
Mr. Hettiarachchige says that the radio will cover a vast audience of Sri Lankans living in Australia. “Our programmes are not typically planed. We have different programmes for different audiences” added Mr. Hettiarachchige. He also went on to say that there are different programs to cater to the young crowd who were brought up in Australia and to the mature generation who love listing to old gramophone music.
“We see that there is a need for a 24/7 Sinhala radio to be up in a country like Australia where a high number of Sri Lankans are living” said Mr. Hettiarachchige.
This Sinhala radio will run on Subscription basis and the listeners need to subscribe in order to receive the service. A separate FM radio receiver will be given to the subscribers upon subscription and the contract for the radio subscription is 12 months.
Ruwan Media states that the subscription is as small as $10 a month and the radio receivers are available as home receivers, car receivers and walkman receivers to suit to the lifestyle of the listener.
“Our strength is our community and that is why we have decided to give opportunity to people from the community to join the radio” said Mr. Hettiarachchige. He also said that this radio is going to create a major change within the Sri Lankan community in Australia.
Though the test transmitting is on now the radio is planned to go on air from October 2009 and Subscription request applications are now available.
