JHU will not leave the govt. – Susil Premajayantha
Tuesday, 30 June 2009 13:30

UPFA General Secretary, Minister Susil Premajayantha said the JHU would never leave the government although it has threatened to quit if the 13th amendment to the Constitution was fully implemented.

Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya, Premajayantha stated that while many parties that initially objected to the formation of provincial councils have now secured slots for their parties in them, there was no fear about government allies quitting as there is no room for police powers to be vested with the respective provincial councils.

He noted that while the JVP speaks against the 13th amendment they continue to contest the Provincial
council elections including the forthcoming Uva Provincial Council elections.

However, Premajayantha stated that the respective Provincial Councils are currently vested with the powers outlined in the 13th amendment excluding police powers, which is faced with a practical problem preventing its implementation.
