Stewart Bell - National Post
The National Post's Stewart Bell has won an award from the South Asian Journalists Association for his investigative series on the civil war in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Bell, a senior reporter at the Post, visited the country in September as it headed toward what would become a decisive showdown in the long-running conflict. His six-part series, Inside Sri Lanka, won the SAJA award for a piece or series focused on the troubled island. Other finalists in the category included PBS's Frontline and The Associated Press.
"Stewart is wholly deserving of this award. He brings a depth of knowledge and sense of fairness to everything he covers. Combined with superlative contacts and dogged on-the-ground fact finding, his international reporting sets the standard,'' said Douglas Kelly, the Post's editor-in-chief.
The SAJA received more than 200 entries in 10 categories for its 2009 awards. Other finalists included The New York Times, The Washington Post, the National Review and Time. The National Post was the only Canadian outlet among the finalists.
Mr. Bell travelled throughout the country for the September series, reporting from the front lines of the conflict and also from villages that had formerly been under the control of Tamil Tiger guerrillas. He returned to the country this past spring to cover the last days of the civil war that came to an end with the defeat of the Tigers.
