The main Opposition party the UNP which issued a statement  on the arbitrary arrest and continued illegal detention of Gen. Sarath Fonseka , the Presidential candidate at the last Presidential candidate said , Gen . Fonseka’s detention is akin to the illegal detention of Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar after the elections.

Former Chief Justice Sarath N Silva states that whatever perspective, the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka runs contrary to all accepted norms of the law as we know it. From the hallowed Constitution to  the Universal Declaration, the ICCPR,  the Code of Criminal Procedure Act,  the Army Act or the CDS Act, the entire gamut of  the law does not extend a reason adequate for the arrest and detention of General Sarath Fonseka who is now a candidate nominated for the Parliamentary Elections.

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has given up giving instructions to the relevant authorities to maintain the polls laws and regulations adding that if his orders were not adhered to then there was very little he can do to rectify the situation.

Foreign counters present at polls

Elections Chief Dayananda Dissanayaka will allow international monitors to be present in all counting centers at the upcoming polls after the main opposition UNP made a request to the Commissioner to ensure that the accurate results are released, the UNP said.
