UNP Ex MP Range Bandara  addressing a media briefing  said , the Govt. ‘s  unending elections malpractices and frauds had defeated the very purposes of holding elections , and by ignoring the directives of the Elections Commissioner it has not only disgraced him , but is also trying to demonstrate to the people that in SL under this  Govt. ,election results are not a true reflection of people’s choice based on their votes.

The govt. having realized that if people vote at election in their full strength it cannot win, is creating an environment where people will not vote. By violence and intimidation directed against voters, and by frauds at elections, it had made the people to lose faith in its election processes and the results so much so that people have been made to think their  voting has no meaning , for even if the candidate of their choice wins the elections results are manipulated to be favorable to the Govt., he pointed out

Referring to the Elections Commissioner’s directive that all posters and cutouts shall be removed on the 12 th, Range Bandara said, if the Elections Commissioner’s order is obeyed  and the banners and cutouts are removed as ordered by him , he would resign from politics immediately after that is done. Range Bandara , added that , because he is so sure that the Commissioner’s orders will not be obeyed that he made this promise.

During the last Presidential elections, the Commissioner appointed a competent authority to control State media violations of election laws. Finally, the Elections commissioner had to withdraw that appointment, because the state media cared two hoots for him or the competent authority, Range Bandara asserted.

Under a Govt. which is lawlessness itself, nothing legitimate or lawful can be expected by the people from such a Govt., he regretted.
